What sets these two sois apart from the rest of Sukhumvit is the feel at street level. It's walkable in a way much of Bangkok isn't, and the community leans local-cool rather than tourist. Thonglor is the more polished, see-and-be-seen end; Ekkamai, one soi over, is a touch more relaxed and has quietly become a favourite of the Japanese community.
That lifestyle comes at a price, but not a Phrom Phong price. One-bedroom rentals generally land ฿25,000–45,000 a month, with plenty of stylish smaller units below and designer duplexes above. It also works beautifully for anyone who wants Sukhumvit's connectivity without Asoke's intensity: you're one or two BTS stops from Phrom Phong and the CBD, but you come home to trees and low-rise calm.

The names tell you everything about the vibe: Noble Form Thonglor, The Capital Ekamai-Thonglo, Rhythm Ekkamai Estate, Taka Haus Ekamai 12, Movenpick Residences Ekkamai, Ceil by Sansiri and a long list of boutique Ekkamai projects. These are buildings that invest in design — sky gardens, statement lobbies, considered unit layouts. If a building's look and feel matters to you as much as its location, this is the area where developers actually compete on it.
The trade-offs
Thonglor's popularity is also its catch: the main soi can clog with traffic, and the deeper you go up it, the further you are from the BTS — many residents rely on the soi's shuttle or a quick motorbike taxi to reach Thong Lo station. Ekkamai is a little easier on that front. And because this is a lifestyle premium, you're paying partly for the address; if nightlife and cafes aren't central to how you live, your money goes further one neighbourhood over. Go in for the life you'll actually lead, not the Instagram version.
The verdict
Thonglor and Ekkamai sell something most Bangkok neighbourhoods can't: a genuine sense of place. You pay a lifestyle premium and you accept the soi traffic, but in return you get leafy, walkable, design-led living with the whole of Sukhumvit a couple of stops away. For the right person, nowhere else in the city quite compares.
